Catherine Ford was born in Bloomsbury, London; her father had abandoned the family, and so she was raised by her mother, grandma and godparents. Ford suffered from anxiety disorder that was rooted in the word association when she was a child. Ford's love for acting grew in her early years. Ford joined at the National Youth Theatre. Ford was accepted into the Sylvia Young Theatre School, but decided after a week that she wasn't a good for the school. Ford decided to apply instead at the Central School of Speech and Drama and eventually secured the position she wanted on her third attempt. A classmate of hers were Shaun Dingwall, who would be later reprise her role in the role of Pete Tyler in Doctor Who. Ford was able to graduate in 1993. She made her television debut in a 1992 episode of Surgical Spirit. She adopted the title Catherine Tate. Tate was featured in such TV shows such including The Bill, Men Behaving Badly, and London Burning. In addition to her regular stage work, Tate was a part of the Royal Shakespeare Company in 2000-2001. Tate's stand-up comedy style that she started adding to her set in the year 1996, was soon gaining the attention of her peers.
